Remarks

This is a project that we completed in Belgravia, London W1 and was a very interesting but challenging job.

The balcony was at the back of this large Victorian townhouse and our only access was via the front of house at street level, then down into the basement (the old servant’s quarters) and in to the garden at the back of the house. Parking was also restricted which added an extra layer of complication.

In addition, the building is listed and governed by strict rules imposed by Grosvenor Estates (a company owned by the Duke of Westminster), and it was imperative that we stayed as closely as possible to the original design of the home.

The client had invited proposals from a number of different roofing companies and after careful consideration had finally chosen us because of “our professionalism, credentials and experience”.

The project launched with a meeting with the client, and it was decided that we needed to construct a scaffold with a temporary roof so that we could remove the old roof and fit the new one.

Once the scaffolding was in place, we had to remove the old covering and ferry the waste materials to the local refuge centre.  This meant that everything had to be transported down the scaffold to the basement at the back of the house and then carried up through the basement to the ground floor and on to the street at the front of the house.

Thankfully, the original roof joists were still in good condition, and so it was possible to fit the new roof decking on top of the original Victorian joists. We then fitted new OSB decking and a Scott Bader 600gm Premier GRP Fleece and topcoat to give a long-lasting and seamless waterproof roof – which also comes with a manufacture’s 25-year materials guarantee.

Our client also requested a solid wood treated deck, which is similar to the original design. They also requested bench seating, steps, electrical power points and pot planters.

Our client was extremely happy with our work and services, and was happy to recommend us to their friends, and for use to post this project on our website so that you can see the final result. They also kindly agreed to leave us an excellent review.

Should you require a balcony or roof decking then please consider our services. We are Approved Installers for Balconette who manufacture Juliet-balconies and balustrades and hand-rails and we would love to help.

Out of interest, here are some shots of the balcony before we started work.
